The Battle of Karbala

Armed conflict, in which Husayn ibn Ali, grandson of the prophet Muhammad and claimant to the succession to the caliphate, was defeated and killed by a military force of the Umayyad caliph Ziyad I. It took place on October 10, 680 (10 Muharram 61, according to the Islamic Calendar) near the city of Karbala (in present-day Iraq). The outcome of the confrontation helped to stabilize the Umayyad dynasty, which had its headquarters in Damascus. The anniversary of the battle, however, became a day of public mourning for Shiite Muslims.

When the followers of Ali, the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad, revolted in Kufa (modern-day Iraq) against Ziyad and called Husayn ibn Ali, the prophet’s grandson and Ali’s son, as caliph, Yazid sent his son Ubaid Allah, governor of Basra, against them. Husayn, marching from Mecca to Kufa with about 150 fighters, was ambushed by Umar ibn Sa’d, who had been sent by Ubaid, near Karbala. The ensuing battle was short and uneven, as Umar had lined up in this area of the West Euphrates between 5,000 and 30,000 men. Husain waited in vain for help from Kufa, which had meanwhile submitted to Ziyad and perished with his accompanying family.

The Shiites commemorate the anniversary of the battle of Karbala with “divine passion” performances (famous scenes of worshipers self-flagellation). The “Day of Ashura”, as the commemoration of the Battle of Karbala is called, is a movable holiday according to the Islamic Calendar (10th of Muharram, 28 July 2023 according to the Gregorian Calendar). Husayn’s tomb, considered a martyr by the Shiites, is located in Karbala and is for them the holiest place in the world.
