The Narendra Modi government is likely to bring a resolution to change India’s official name during the special session of Parliament, scheduled from September 18 to 22, Times Now reported on Tuesday.

Rumor has it that India is going to be renamed Bharat.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh also confirmed that official invitations to the Indian President’s G20 dinner, to be held this weekend, have been sent with the name “President of Bharat” instead of the usual “President of India”.

Many leaders of the ruling BJP party on Tuesday came out in favor of renaming the country as ‘Bharat’.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma wrote: “REPUBLIC OF BHARAT – happy and proud that our culture is marching forward boldly.”

BJP Rajya Sabha MP Naresh Bansal also moved the motion during the recently concluded Monsoon Session in the Upper House, saying the name “India” is a symbol of “colonial slavery” and “should be removed from the Constitution”.

“The British changed the name of Bharat to India. According to Article 1, the Constitution defines: “India, i.e. Bharat”. Our country has been known by the name ‘Bharat’ for thousands of years … it is the ancient name of this country and is found in ancient Sanskrit texts. The name ‘India’ was given by the colonial Raj and is therefore a symbol of slavery. The name India should be removed from the Constitution,” the Rajya Sabha MP said, according to ANI.
