In a significant step to bolster defense ties, Israel has expressed its readiness to share valuable operational experience from its use of the advanced F-35 stealth fighter jets with Greece. This comes as both nations navigate increasing instability in the Middle East.
Speaking to Kathimerini, Israel Defense Forces (IDF) spokesperson Lt. Col. Nadav Shoshani highlighted Israel’s extensive hands-on knowledge with the U.S.-made aircraft. He noted that Israel has conducted numerous missions across various fronts since the events following October 7, 2023, giving it the most comprehensive regional expertise with the F-35.
“Israel has the greatest experience in the entire region when it comes to the F-35,” Shoshani stated. “We will do everything we can to share our knowledge with the Greeks.”
Greece, which has ordered 20 F-35 aircraft (with potential for more), is set to receive its first jets in the United States by the end of 2028. The aircraft will then be based at the upgraded military facility in Andravida, Peloponnese, starting in early 2030. Greek pilots have already benefited from joint training with Israeli counterparts, and Israeli forces are anticipated to join this year’s Iniochos multinational air exercise in Greece.
The Israeli official pointed out particular Greek interest in Israeli tactics for suppressing enemy air defenses (SEAD) and conducting rapid strikes on high-value, time-sensitive targets—areas where Israel has gained substantial real-world experience due to ongoing regional threats.
This announcement aligns with broader efforts to strengthen trilateral defense cooperation among Greece, Cyprus, and Israel. Just days ago, the three countries signed a revised military cooperation memorandum for 2026, paving the way for expanded joint exercises, training, and intelligence sharing. Shoshani emphasized that such partnerships among nations with shared values are essential for fostering regional stability, with additional collaborative activities between Greece and Israel expected throughout the year.
The deepening ties reflect shared concerns over threats from Iran, Hezbollah’s activities in Lebanon, and other regional dynamics, including competition in Syria.
This collaboration underscores Greece’s strategic push to modernize its air force with cutting-edge fifth-generation capabilities while leveraging Israel’s proven operational insights to enhance readiness in an unpredictable geopolitical environment.
